Article 13: Best of the Summer Day 2

July 29, 2010

Day 2 of the Best of the Summer started with the third and final game in pool play while the evening was the beginning of elimination rounds. The top two teams from each pool advanced to the "Gold" brackets while the remaining teams drew the "Silver" bracket. Nor Cal Select and Nor Cal Supreme each advanced to a fifth game, while KWA Pride, Drew Gooden Soldiers, Lakeshow 17s, and Oakland Rebels will return Thursday. E-Time Hoops and YBA Black are finished for the tournament.

Nor Cal Select started the day with a crushing 70-48 defeat to Pump N Run Elite (Southern California) that sent them to the Silver brackets. In the first game of that round, they defeated Nor Cal Pump N Run Black 80-58.

After starting the first day winless, Nor Cal Supreme won their morning game 65-52 behind the play of Jalil Eppenger, Tanner Giddings, and Booker Shabazz. In the first game of tournament play, Nor Cal Supreme won by a no-show that allowed them to play another game.

E-Time Hoops won their first game of the day 53-45 over Clovis West (Fresno). In the first round of the Gold brackets, they lost 58-49 to Team Detroit. Coach Ernest Taubodo explained that only seven players made the trip after last week's tournament in Las Vegas. And after the morning game, guard Robert Duncan hurt his finger and the team just got worn down with six healthy players.

YBA Black won their morning game 69-60 against Alaska Flight behind Remi Barry who had 17 points. In their first bracket play, they blew a halftime lead to lose by five and were eliminated. Coach Ken Gee confirmed that Barry is being recruited by UCLA, Arizona, and St John's. He also stated that 6-foot-1 guard Aaron Hendricks of Del Oro High is being recruited by ICU, Chico State, and Yuba City.

KWA Pride started the day with a loss to Arizona Magic Pump N Run/Hurst 62-56. But the loss did not prevent them from advancing to the Gold bracket, where they won their first game over Colorado Shining Stars Black 63-52.

The Drew Gooden Soldiers won easily in both of their games. Coach Damany Hendrix also noted that Josiah Turner did not make the trip from Las Vegas. In addition, Jabari Bird, Ike Iroegbu, and Aaron Gordon temporarily graduated from the Soldiers 16U squad. Jabari Brown sat out of the final game of pool play but the Soldiers cooled the Henderson Heat 75-39 behind Bird's 23. In the first game of the Gold bracket, the Soldiers won 83-68 against BTI Inland that had some testy moments of pushing and shoving.

Lakeshow 17s won their morning game 59-44 over the Minnesota Fury and followed up with a 61-50 opening round bracket game win over Williamette Reign White (Oregon). Mark Tollefsen and James Davis led the team in scoring but 6-foot-5 guard Chris Read of Castro Valley High sparked the win with a thunderous dunk.

A correction from yesterday - Concordia has interest in Jordan Giusti and has not made an offer.

The Oakland Rebels lost the morning game 57-47 to Idaho Select Black, but they rebounded in the opening Gold bracket game by winning 49-42 over OC Pride Red. Several NCAA coaches were watching their games to scout Juan Anderson, Brendan Keane, and Trevawn Taylor.
