Article 129: Johnson runs with Mustangs

January 26, 2011

Franky Johnson is a senior shooting guard for the Rodriguez Mustangs. Like his team mascot, he likes to play at a fast tempo pace. As a junior last year, he averaged 18.2 points, 2 rebounds, and 3 assists for the Vanden Vikings before he transferred to Rodriguez for his senior year.

Johnson transferred to Rodriguez because his family moved into the school district. As a result, he got more exposure playing for the Mustangs while playing against better competition than previously and getting to play with a higher level of teammates. The move has gotten him more looks from colleges as he has had more opportunities to get to the next level at Rodriguez than at Vanden.

At 6-foot-1 and 155 pounds, Johnson models his game after Denver Nugget JR Smith because he is a prolific scorer who can hit the 3-point shot while has the speed to get to the basket. Johnson considers himself to be a finesse player who has the ability to score from the perimeter but who can also slash to the basket. His favorite move is to in n out the defender that allows him to step back for an open mid-range shot.

During the summer, he plays for his club team Fairfield Elite. He works on his shooting, ball handling, and jumping abilities. Johnson has been playing organized basketball since the 4th grade and has been a varsity starter since his sophomore year. He has never been in the playoffs and would like to help his Mustangs achieve a winning record and then make a run in the playoffs.

Fairfield Elite Coach Victor Johnson, who is Franky's father as well, says, "Franky is a very good mid-range and 3 point shooter. He has a quick first step that gets him to the rack with ease. He has quick hands and good lateral movement which allows him to cause deflections and get steals. He has a calm demeanor with very aggressive mind set always with a determined look. Franky is a quiet leader on the floor, leading by example showing hustle and a determination to get his team a win."

Rodriguez High Coach Al Attles says, "Franky has unlimited range on his jump shot. His shot is fluid, with a quick release and great arc. He is a clever ball handler with deceptive moves. He is the ultimate scorer than routinely makes tough shots easily! His jump shot sets up a lethal floater. He is evolving as a playmaker."

Lewis & Clark, Menlo College, Sonoma State, Denver, and Wichita State have been in contact with Johnson. He is looking for a system that likes to get up and down on the court. He is open to the location of the college. Academically, he wants to attend a school that can offer a good education as he would like to major in communications or journalism.

Coach Attles says, "Franky is quiet, with good sense of humor. He has an incredible work ethic and often shoots up to 700 shots on off days. He loves basketball and spends most of his off time trying to improve. He is a D1 scorer that needs to refine his game to be recruited at that level. He will score wherever he lands. NAIAs and D2s have shown interest."

Johnson believes that the current season is going descent. The Mustangs have a 10-8 record but Johnson believes that they are a lot better than the record as they have had a few close losses. Johnson wants the team to go 10-0 in league and carry that momentum over into playoffs. He thinks that the team is playing more together and developing chemistry. As far as stats for the current season, he is averaging 13.3 points, 1.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 1 steal per game. Watch for this Mustang to be running wild in Fairfield during the current season.
