Article 88: Like Thor, Davis brings thunder

November 25, 2010
In Norse mythology, Thor is a hammer-wielding god associated with thunder, lightning, storms, strength, and destruction. Buhach Colony High just so happens to have Thor as its mascot and the team name is the Buhach Colony Thunder. This is rather appropriate to describe the team's running back, Jarrell Davis.
Davis plays both running back and defensive back for the Thunder. The team finished last year with a 6-5 record that ended with a first round playoff loss to St. Mary's (Stockton) 49-7. Last year, he had 103 rushes that netted 1006 yards and 14 touchdowns. His efforts earned him offensive running back of the year for his Central California Conference. Davis has been playing football since the 6th grade and has been a varsity starter since his sophomore year.

As a senior, he has 102 rushes for 1405 yards and 20 touchdowns with his longest run being 75 yards. He also added 7 receptions for 152 yards and had two punt returns for touchdowns. More importantly, his team has been undefeated for the season and is making a playoff run.

At 5-foot-7 and 155 pounds, Davis can run 4.45 seconds in the 40-yard dash, has a shuttle time of 4.01 seconds, can bench press 290 pounds, squat 415 pounds, and has a vertical of 38 inches. His game can be best compared to Tennessee Titan Chris Johnson who is small but is a fast, shifty, and powerful runner.

Davis considers his best football move to be his dip in dip out move because this move allows his lead back to block more easily for him to create the big running gaps for the big gainers. During his free time, he tries to improve his footwork and breakaway speed.

Buhach Colony High Coach Kevin Swartwood says, "Jarrell has speed, strength, and vision. He is focused and has a strong desire to win. Off the field, he is friendly and likeable. I think there is a Division I school out there that needs to take a chance and recruit a 5'7 kid because he is a football player. On game day, he plays like a 6'5 tall kid. Jarrell is the toughest kid on our team and he is the hardest hitter too."

Currently, Sacramento State has been in contact with him. Coach Daniel DaPrato has been looking at Davis as a possible running back and special teams recruit. Davis likes Sacramento State because it has a nice campus and a good football program. He feels that the coaching staff is legit and the college was the first program to look at his football skills.

Davis is excited about the opportunity to play in college. He would be the first member of his family to attend college. As a result, academics in addition to football would be important to him in his college decision. In addition, he would like to be close to home so that his family can watch his college games.

Jdeezy, what his teammates and friends call him, also plays for the basketball team and runs track and field. Davis was named all area for basketball and was MVP for his team as a junior. He has been on the varsity basketball team since his sophomore year. He is also open to playing basketball or track and field in college. Watch Davis thundering through defensive lines in the rest of the playoff season for Buhach Colony High in Atwater, California.
