Same name, same position, and same skills. These phrases describe that of Isaiah Lott, free safety for the St. Francis High Lancers of the West Catholic Athletic League (WCAL) who is the son of NFL Hall of Famer, Ronnie Lott, and plays the same position as his famous father. Despite this lineage, Lott does not feel the pressure of playing up to the lofty expectations but uses it as motivation to be a better player.
The Lancer safety logged 50 tackles and two interceptions last year as St. Francis went 9-4 and lost in the third round of the playoffs to Bellarmine.
At 5-foot-9 and 175 pounds, Lott has the physical attributes to play at the next level as he can run 4.51 seconds in the 40-yard dash, bench press 260 pounds, and has a vertical of 33 inches. He compares his game to Bob Sanders of the Indianapolis Colt because Lott is fast, a good cover man, and can hit hard.
The Lancers run a 3-4 defense that relies heavily on its secondary. As a result, Lott is often directing his defensive teammates into proper formations and schemes. He considers his best football skill to be his football IQ and ability to anticipate the game. This should be no surprise as he has his father to mentor him and who was considered to be a great defensive mind and presence of the game during his time. In addition to his cerebral game, Lott has the necessary mental toughness as he has overcome an ACL injury as well in the past year.
Lott started playing flag football at four years old while he started playing Pop Warner at twelve years old. He has attended the Arizona, Boise State, BYU, Cal Poly and Northwestern summer camps where he has been primarily working on getting faster, working on footwork, and being a better cover guy. This safety wants to play to his potential this fall and wants to lead St. Francis to a section title. Lott comes across as being mature as he says, "The team goal is to win the section title. But it will be a game by game process."
Lott has no geographic restrictions in his college destination. The programs that have contacted him include Arizona, Boise St, Cal Poly, Northwestern, Oregon, Washington, UC Davis, USC, and Utah. He has not received any offers yet but has made unofficial visits to Arizona, Boise St, and BYU during past Nike camps. His current favorites are Arizona and Boise State because he likes the coaches, defensive formations that they play, and the family environment. His recruiting contact at each school is Greg Brown and Marcel Yates respectively.
Lott wants to attend a college that has a good academic and football program. He wants the football program to maximize his potential, to get him to the next level, and to have a good family environment. His ultimate goal for football is to play in the NFL. However, this Lancer is realistic and knows that football cannot be his only skill.
Lott sports a 3.0 GPA and has a very solid 1840 SAT score that makes him academically eligible. He wants to major in Business in college, as his best subject is Math. With his education and football background, Lott has eventual ambitions of being an analyst or reporter in the sports broadcasting industry.
Lott spends his free time by giving back to the community that includes volunteering in many of his high school clubs and also assisting in football camps. He appears well grounded and does not treat football, as the end all, be all. In addition, he is humble about his football pedigree and has his academics and community service to complement his football potential/skills. Hence, Lott is a "Lott" more than just football.
