December 24, 2010

The 2010 DJ Frandsen Memorial showcased eight games in two days at Bellarmine Prep in San Jose. The event was a showcase of teams mostly from the South Bay, which is fast becoming fertile ground for finding young talent. Here are the results from Day 1, summaries of the Day 2 games, and some team analysis.

Game 1 Willow Glen Rams 66 Wallenberg Bulldogs 49

Losers from Game 3 and 4 play each other on Day 2.

Wallenberg Bulldogs 34 vs. Leland Chargers 58: Wallenberg was able to keep the game close early as they had a 13-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Chargers took charge from then on as they hit five 3-pointers in the second quarter to take a 33-25 lead into the half. Leland's defense allowed only two points in the third quarter as they would lead 47-27. The Chargers would close out Wallenberg 58-34.

Wallenberg Bulldogs Analysis: The Bulldogs had a tough two days in San Jose as they lost both games by fairly large margins. They drop now to 2-7. The team lacks a post presence as their tallest player is 6-foot-3. The only team in their league with a winning record is Lowell High. So, second place in the league could still be wide open.

Leland Chargers Analysis: The Chargers will go as their 6-foot-8 center Justin Dueck. He had 25 points and showed some range with three 3-point shots. Coach Steve Seandel believes the team's offense will have to play through their center. In addition to Dueck, the team has sizable forwards. As a result, Seandel wants opponents to "play over us." He also is pleased with his team's rebounding. But he has a young roster and wants them to get more experience and be more consistent.

Palo Alto Vikings 42 vs. Bellarmine Bells 45: In a battle of depleted squads, Palo Alto took an 11-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Vikings were able to extend the lead to 23-18 at the end of the half. The third quarter had anemic offense as Bellarmine was able to cut the lead to 28-26. The Bells were able to stifle the Palo Alto offense in the fourth quarter. Bellarmine was able to tie the game at 36-36 and eventually win the game 45-42.

Palo Alto Vikings Analysis: The Vikings were the other two loss team in the event as they drop to 4-3. Coach Bob Roehl is waiting for football players Davante Adams and T.J. Braff to get into basketball shape and start playing. In addition, perimeter threat Max Schmarzo has an ankle injury. Roehl is counting on these inactive players to bring energy and team chemistry when they come back. Sophomore forward EJ Floreal had 16 points in the loss. He looks promising as he has good hands, moves efficiently in the paint, and has the size to play in the interior.

Bellarmine Bells Analysis: The Bells were coming off of an emotional low as they blew a 14 point first half lead from day 1 and gave up 51 points in the second half of that game. Not surprisingly, they came out a bit flat in this game. Coach Patrick Schneider has a young team but he sees his team learning from previous games. He wants the defense to improve but sees the team committed to improving. He feels that the team will be in an underdog role in the WCAL but he believes his team up to the challenge. The team is also missing Zac Thomas (knee injury during the summer) and Rufus Wolokolie (football injury). Football star and point guard Kris Olugbode thought the team came out flat but was pleased with the late fourth quarter injury to pull this win out. Olugbode plays basketball as he does football. He has no fear in taking the ball into the paint and does not shy away from contact as he scored 12 points.

Willow Glen Rams 52 vs. Burlingame Panthers 59: The size advantage of Burlingame proved to be the difference. Forward Rodrigo Puliceno
had a deep cut on his head at the end of the first quarter that would force him out for the rest of the game. The Panthers still had an 11-10 lead. Despite his absence, the Panthers built the lead to a 24-20 margin at the end of the half. Burlingame extended the margin to 39-27 at the end of the third quarter as their defense limited the Rams. Burlingame held on in the fourth to win 59-52.

Willow Glen Rams Analysis: The Rams are now 7-2. Coach Todd Meeker knows that his team is a bit undersized. As a result, he wants to play a fast tempo pace as he has some solid guard play including senior Muktar Abdi who had 14 points with three 3-point shots. Meeker wants the team to not rush shots and work on the shot selection.

Burlingame Panthers Analysis: Burlingame is also 7-2 with the win. Coach Jeff Dowd feels that the team needs more consistency on both ends. The team needs to be able to handle pressing defenses as their only losses were against San Ramon Valley and Serra. The strength of the team is its inside play of Puliceno and Kyle Shaffer. Shaffer had 12 points for the Panthers. If the team can play to its potential, they can make a run at their league.

Monte Vista Mustangs 50 vs. Santa Teresa Saints 58: Santa Teresa struggled day 1 in the first half and they did likewise on day 2. The Mustangs had a 10-9 first quarter lead and extended it to 24-19 at the end of the half. The Saints were able to capture the lead again 32-31 with 2:12 left in the third quarter. Santa Teresa was up 36-33 at the end of the third quarter. They were able to win 58-50 as they seem to wear down the Mustangs in the fourth quarter.

Monte Vista Mustangs Analysis: The Mustangs are now 5-4. They had one player with double digit points at 10 points as everyone else was in single digits. The Saints collapsed on forward Mike Harris as they forced the Mustangs to shoot from the perimeter. The Mustangs were only good for five 3-point shots. Harris has the size to be effective in the interior but will need the perimeter game to work for him to get more open interior looks.

Santa Teresa Saints Analysis: After losing the first two games of the season, the Saints are now 5-2. Guard Denzel Copeland had 14 points while wing Trevor Priest had 15 points. Coach Mitch Priest finds his team chemistry improving and players understand what their roles are. He sees his team being able to adjust well defensively game to game. He wants better rebounding and less turnovers. Copeland feels that the team is becoming more disciplined while Trevor Priest felt the team defense made key adjustments in the second half of the game.
