Article 92: Monarchs seek WCAL crown

December 2, 2010

School: Archbishop Mitty
Mascot: Monarchs
League: West Catholic Athletic League
Division: II
Head Coach: Tim Kennedy - 3rd year as head coach
Assistant Coach: Chris Caballero and Pete Dumesnil
2009 Record: 21-10
2009 Playoff Results: The Monarchs were CCS DII champions, but lost in the Norcal semifinals. The CCS playoff had Mitty winning over Sobrato (Morgan Hill, CA), Palo Alto, and St. Francis (Mountain View). The Norcal playoff had Mitty winning over Fairfield but losing to Woodcreek.
Final NCP 2009 Ranking: No. 14
Preseason NCP 2010 Ranking: No. 6

Players to Watch: Sophomore forward Aaron Gordon is on everybody's top 50 sophomore list. He is a great shot blocker who can either take it in for a dunk or shoot from outside. He is a versatile player, who can pretty much play any position.

Sleepers: Kyle Toth, Brandon White, Neil
Vranicar. Toth is a guard who can hit from the perimeter. White is another guard who has good ball handling skills and is athletic as he doubles as a wide receiver in football. Vranicar is a forward who will provide support to Gordon.

Team Offensive Strengths: Aaron Gordon is able to create mismatches and all the players around him being able to make plays.

Team Defensive Strengths: The Monarchs will pressure the ball and close off gaps.

Games to Watch In Division: The WCAL games will not allow for any night off. St. Francis and Bellarmine are circled on the schedule as they are local rivals.

Games to Watch Out of Division: Newark High (12/17) and Oakland High (12/22) are prominent programs that will give a good measuring stick of where Mitty needs to improve.

If these 3 things go well, the season will be a success: Coach Kennedy believes the season can be a success if the Monarchs defend, rebound, and play as a team.

Summary: The focus will be on Gordon which is not surprising. But Mitty has a few other players that opponents would be wise to scout before playing them. Regardless, Mitty will probably be the preseason favorites in the loaded WCAL.
