The point guard is often considered to be the "brains" of a basketball team. He can dictate the tempo for his team on offense while directing the defensive positioning and sets. Michael Cubit is that type of point guard.
On the basketball court, Cubit has been the starting point guard for Hiram Johnson the past two years. On a young team as a sophomore, Cubit's team went 2-26. Last year, the Warriors went 10-17 with Cubit averaging 15 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists. The growing pains of those two years taught Cubit how to persevere and work extra hard to give the team and himself a fighting chance.
During this past summer, Cubit made the difficult decision of transferring back to Pleasant Grove High where he attended as a freshman. The reason for the transfer was for the academic environment. In addition, he played for his Norcal Select club team to work on his ball handling, defense, and jump shot.
Cubit's court skills remind his spectators of former Georgia Tech guard, Kenny Anderson. Cubit, also a lefty, is a finesse player who can drive to the basket or shoot the pull up jumper. He is also a skilled passer who gets his teammates involved with the flow of the offense. Cubit considers his game to be quite unique in the Sacramento area because not too many opponents can match up with his quickness and he has improved his perimeter game and defensive skills.
Norcal Select Coach Shawn Osborne says, "Mike is very crafty and has a nice change of speed to his game as he changes gears very well. Having the opportunity to watch him play, I have been impressed by the variety in his game. In one trip down the floor, he throws a no look lob while the next trip has him going strong to the basket. His shooting form has a nice trajectory. Mike likes to play defense and is a cold-blooded point guard who just comes to play and handle his business."
At 6-foot-1 and 160 pounds, Cubit started playing organized basketball in the eighth grade. He considers his hesitation move to be his strongest basketball skill as few can guard his signature move. Cubit plans to team with Arik Armstead, Cody Demps, Malik Thames, and Jose Rodriguez at Pleasant Grove to win a section championship while going on to battle for state title.
Fresno State, Pepperdine, San Francisco State, San Jose State, and USF have been in contact with this Eagle. Currently, Cubit likes Fresno State and San Jose State because of their proximity to his home. Cubit wants to play for an up tempo basketball program and would like to attend a college that has a supportive academic program for student athletes. He would like to be close to his family but will not let that be the main decision in his college destination. Coach Shawn Osborne says, "Mike is a low DI prospect. He is going to make some school really happy. I feel like he has been in the shadow of other players but he has the game to be on that elite level. I believe him going to Pleasant Grove will be an absolute blessing."
Off the basketball court, Cubit rocks to the rhythm of his favorite hip hop artists and rappers. The music helps to inspire and motivate him. In addition, Cubit is uncle to his sister's two kids. The time that he spends with them has helped him become more selfless and mature. Watch for Cubit moving to his beat on the basketball court this upcoming season.
