Article 59: For Duncan, winning trumps everything

October 2, 2010

Robert Duncan is a team player first as his goal for each game is to make sure that his team wins. As a junior starter for the Granite Bay Grizzlies of the Sierra Foothill League, Duncan averaged 20 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists in a 16-11 season. His goal in his senior year is to lead his team to league and section titles, and a state title run. Duncan will team in the backcourt with Joe Eyen, who is an accurate perimeter shooter.

Duncan plays in the summer for his E-Time Hoops team to work on all aspects of his basketball game. E-Time Hoops Coach Ernest Taubodo says, "Robert is a budding star in the making. He is such a balanced player that is strong in many areas. The one quality that separates him from others is his will to win! Robert will sacrifice scoring, playing time, his body, and anything else necessary to get the "W." Duncan says winning is all that matters to him on the court. Hence, he plays basketball with the mindset similar to LA Laker Kobe Bryant because he does whatever is needed to win.

At 6-foot-2 and 165 pounds, Duncan considers himself to be a finesse slasher because he can get to the paint with ease but also can shoot the jumper. His hesitation move is his best basketball move as it allows him to get his defender off-balanced. Coach Taubodo says, "Robert is an extension of his coach on the basketball court. He is a lead by example kind of guy. His mental and physical tough attitude is contagious, and his teammates respect and follow his lead."

This Grizzly has been playing basketball for close to eight years. He considers his biggest basketball challenge to be battling injuries such as a sprained ankle that kept him out early in his junior season. Due to his basketball experience and perseverance, Duncan has been getting more interest from the college programs. This has been especially true after his play during the summer.

At various summer tournaments, Duncan was able to shine and lead his club team. Coach Taubodo says, "Robert gained a lot of notice this summer because he took games over. He was arguably our best player and leading scorer in most games. His leadership was evident as he displayed the most emotion. He also made big time clutch plays and willed our team to victory."

Air Force, Chico State, Dominican University, Puget Sound, Sacramento State, and San Francisco State have been in contact with him. Duncan lists Air Force and Chico State as his favorites. He visited with Chico State in September and says, "I really liked the basketball team and the coaching staff is great. I liked how the town was so college friendly and basketball is a big thing there." Duncan likes the Air Force because it is a top academic school in the nation and everything is top of the line. He likes what Coach Pryor has said about what they have to offer. However, Duncan does not prefer one over the other and is still trying to sort through the recruiting process.

Coach Taubodo says, "I believe Robert is a hidden gem in the realm of recruiting. He has received interest from 12 different programs within the last month. If given the opportunity, Robert could successfully compete at the Division I level."

Duncan wants to attend a winning program where he will have a chance to play. This Grizzly does not have any current geographic restrictions. Academically, Duncan has a 3.00 GPA and has not taken the SATs yet. He would like to major in Business as his favorite subject is Math. Expect a winning attitude to take Duncan far in both his basketball and life endeavors.
