Of the 128 17U teams in the annual Double Pump Best of the Summer Tournament, 13 are from Northern California. The Drew Gooden Soldiers look to ride the momentum gained by winning the Las Vegas Fab 48 cahmpionship, while KWA Pride, Lakeshow 17s and Oakland Rebels are 2-for-2 in pool play thus far.
Here are the notable teams and players from the first day:
Kris Weems' KWA Pride had their game going as they won both of their opening day games. KWA Pride defeated Team Credo (Servite, CA) 48-28 and the Houston Jr Hardballers 47-42.
Rodrigo Puliceno 6-foot-4 F Burlingame (2011) KWA Pride: Puliceno played strong inside and was aggressive. Weems said that a few Canadian schools have seriously inquired about his services for next year.
Jonathan Wright 6-foot-3 F Irvington (2011) KWA Pride: After the trip to Las Vegas last week, Weems has been getting a few feelers about Wright. One to watch for was his assessment.
Richard Harris 6-foot-6 F Menlo (2012) KWA Pride: After the trip to Las Vegas last week, Weems has been getting a few feelers about Harris. Weems believes that Harris will only garner more attention when he becomes a senior.
Drew Gooden Soldiers brought their strong play from Las Vegas and cruised to two first day victories. The Soldiers defeated 1 Tough School (Southern California) 72-57 and Next Level Select-Colorado 72-45. Both games were heavily viewed by both NCAA coaches and the general public as the Soldiers athleticism and teamwork was at display.
Jabari Brown 6-foot-4 G Oakland (2011) Drew Gooden Soldiers: Brown paced the Soldiers in the first game with 23 points on accurate perimeter shooting and a few strong putbacks. For the second game, he chipped in with 13.
Brandon Ashley 6-foot-9 C Bishop O'Dowd (2012) Drew Gooden Soldiers: Ashley contributed with an inside presence in each game. He matched the high scoring in the second game with 13 points.
Lakeshow 17 won both games in differing fashion. In the first game, they blew a double digit first half lead and rallied furiously in the second half behind Mark Tollefsen to win 64-63 over Chaffey Washington (Washington state). In the second game, Lakeshow won easily 84-30 over I Can All Stars Silver (Southern California) after leading at halftime 43-9.
Mark Tollefsen 6-foot-9 F San Ramon Valley (2011) Lakeshow 17s: In the second half of the first game, Tollefsen was fouled hard by an undercut that took him out of the game momentarily. When he came back, he made an impressive breakaway dunk and made several strong inside rebound put backs in a matter of minutes to help seal the comeback. Tollefsen totaled 10 and 9 points respectively for the two games. In addition, he confirmed that San Jose St has made an offer while Long Beach State and UC Irvine are heavily courting him.
Ben Freeland 6-foot-9 C Montgomery (2011) Lakeshow 17s: Freeland totaled 10 and 21 points in each game. In the second game blowout, Freeland set the pace with several strong inside buckets. Freeland confirmed that Columbia has made an offer.
James Davis 6-foot-1 G Arroyo (2011) Lakeshow 17s: Davis displayed his normal quickness and vertical game. Northern Colorado has offered.
Jordan Giusti 6-foot-1 PG San Ramon Valley (2011) Lakeshow 17s: Floor general for Lakeshow. Concordia has made an offer to him.
Oakland Rebels won both of their games with strong defense and a solid team effort. They defeated BTI All Stars (Southern California) 51-45 and then defeated Illinois Old School 49-39. The scoring was fairly distributed among the team.
YBA Black split their two games by losing the first game 60-55 to BTI Double Pump (Southern California). In the second game, they struggled early as they were down double digits for most of the first half. With less than a minute left and down 80-74, they were able to score the last seven points for an 81-80 win over BCA (Southern California).
Remi Berry 6-foot-7 F Del Oro (2010) YBA Black: Berry logged 12 and 29 points respectively. When asked about his NCAA eligibility status, he stated that nothing has changed. Despite that, many NCAA coaches were on hand to view the Del Oro High alum.
E-Time Hoops also had a split. They won their first game 71-65 over Houston Select but fell short to San Diego All Stars Gold 45-44 as E-Time only had seven players available for the second game.
JT Adenrele 6-foot-7 F Oakmont (2011) E-Time Hoops: He played big in the first game and contributed 14 points. According to Coach Ernest Taubodo, UC Irvine, UC Davis, UOP, UC Riverside, Portland State, Washington State, University of Denver, Utah State, Pepperdine, Cal Poly, and Sac State have inquired with a few very close to offering.
Robert Duncan 6-foot-3 G Granite Bay (2011) E-Time Hoops: He led the team in the first game with 25 points. Sac State, Air Force, Concordia, and Lutheran College have inquired.
