Article 75: Young farmer planting seeds

November 4, 2010

Stevonte Young is an all-around athlete by your typical high school basketball point guard standard. Young, who is the No. 37 ranked player in the NorCalPreps.com 2011 boys basketball rankings, is 5-foot-10 and 156 pounds. The senior-to-be can run 4.7 seconds in the 40-yard dash, bench press 185 pounds, squat 215 pounds, and has a vertical of 37 inches. In addition, he runs on the track and field team in the 200 meter, 400 meter, long jump, and triple jump events. His desire is to play basketball at the NCAA level.

Young's athleticism was put to use for the Hayward High Farmers of the Hayward Area Athletic League (HAAL) last year as the team went 14-12. This Farmer averaged 15 points, 4 rebounds, and 6 assists per game. His goal for the next season is to average 20 points per game and to lead his team to a California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) title. Young will be able to team with talented backcourt guard, A.J. Salary.

Young started playing organized basketball since the fourth grade and has been the starting point guard since his freshman year for the Farmers. This slasher causes matchup problems for opposing defenses as Young is quick and runs around all over the court. He compares his game to NBA All-Star, Deron Williams, because of his quickness, jump shot, and basketball IQ.

During this summer, Young has been working out to improve his vertical with calf and squat exercises. In addition, he has been playing with his summer club High Intensity. Young considers the competition in the Bay Area that he faces on a regular basis to be a challenge that has helped him to hone his skills.

High Intensity Coach Duke Despanie says, "Stevonte's strengths are ball handling, speed/quickness, a floor general can lead a team a coach on the floor, and a great on ball and off ball defender. Stevonte worked on improving his jump shot and had a great AAU year. His hard work helped him expand his game. On the court, he is very competitive, vocal, team player, and leader."

The Hayward High product has been contacted by Portland State, Prairie View A&M and San Francisco. He has no geographic restrictions in his college destination. Coach Despanie says, "Stevonte is going to make some coach at the NCAA level very happy. He is a pure point guard who has the work ethic and willingness to learn. I believe he will do well at the next level."

Academically eligible for the NCAA, Young has a 3.00 GPA 1180 SAT score. He would like to major in Political Science as his favorite subject is English. Young has worked hard on his academics to be NCAA eligible as his studies were not his first priority earlier in his school life. In addition to his academics and basketball, Young plays the piano and the violin during his free time to relax. Watch for this Farmer in Hayward in the HAAL this upcoming season.
