The Bay Shore Athletic League is loaded with top teams and top players. Salesian, St. Mary's, and St. Joseph Notre Dame are in the league with top rated players including Dominic Artis, Glenn Baral, Brendan Keane, among others. Robbie Herndon of St. Patrick/St. Vincent is one player who should not be overlooked during this current season.
Herndon is a shooting guard who was critical in helping the Bruins to a 25-7 record last year that ended in a playoff loss to St. Mary's 58-44. Last year, Herndon averaged 13 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists per game. His individual goal for his senior year is to be MVP of his league and team while his team goal is to win NCS and get to state.
At 6-foot-3 and 180 pounds, Herndon considers himself to be a versatile player as he can play tough and be physical while still use finesse to finish plays. He will be called upon to be more physical as his Bruin team is a bit undersized this year. At the Chris Vontoure Classic at De La Salle, Herndon put up 36 points and 16 rebounds against a Deer Valley team that has two 6-foot-8 interior players. Herndon was not shy in going against these bigger players as he was quite relentless in going after rebounds and going to the basket.
Bruins Coach Derek Walker says, "Robbie's strengths are that he has 1. A great feel for the game, 2. strong ball handler, 3. very good mid range game, 4. great rebounder for his size, and 5. plays big in big games. On the court, he is a smooth athlete who makes the game look easy. He can drive to the basket and pull-up for mid range jumpers. He is our leading rebounder this year. Off the court, he is a great student and also excelled at football as a wide receiver."
Herndon considers his best skills to be his ability to shoot and score and his rebounding tenacity. He models his game after Denver Nugget Carmelo Anthony because he can score from inside and outside. During the offseason, Herndon works on his game with his club team, Team 94. Herndon started playing basketball when he was four years old and has been a varsity starter since his freshman year.
Coach Walker says, "I think he is the most underrated player in Northern California. He is a two time All BSAL player. In his sophomore year, he was 2nd team and #6 overall while last year, he was 1st team and #3 behind Desmond Simmons and Dom Lee. He will surpass the 1000 point mark real soon."
In addition, Herndon also plays as a wide receiver on the football team. His Bruins' football season and high school football career ended with a disappointing 34-6 loss to Ferndale in the playoffs. Herndon was first team all league as he was the leading receiver with over 700 yards and 15 touchdowns.
Herndon has been getting contact for both basketball and football from various D1 and D2 schools. He likes the colleges in California but would not be against going out of state if another program fits his skills. He wants to play for a team with heart that plays tough defense and shares the ball. He wants a nice campus with things to keep students active outside of the campus. This Bruin has a 3.8 GPA and considers English as his best subject. He plans on getting a solid academic education to help him after his sports days.
Coach Walker says, "I've coached Robbie all four years. I had him on JV as a frosh when we went 22-1. He was the leading scorer. The kid is a winner and competes. The SPSV basketball program has made the playoffs every year that Robbie has been on the team. He's had some big games and he has not found his shot yet. As a frosh, he made over 70 3 pointers. Robbie is a scholarship athlete in my opinion. He just got on the AAU circuit last year. He is a definite sleeper right now."
During his free time, he spends time in the outdoors such as dirt biking, wakeboarding, and snowboarding. Look for this smooth Bruin in the BSAL in this current basketball season in Vallejo.
