Article 58: Lewis a lock down corner

October 1, 2010

The prototypical cornerback is someone who is physically gifted enough to defend against the faster and taller wide receivers. In addition, this cornerback has to be mentally strong enough to forget about blown assignments and be able to handle one-on-one island coverage. Well, Desmond Lewis from Pleasant Grove High fits this description.

As a first time varsity sophomore starter last year, Lewis had to quickly adjust to the speed and size of the varsity competition. Lewis says, "I learned quickly that I would have to work a lot harder to be an effective player on my team. I took my licks during the season but eventually showed my coaches that I can hold my own." Pleasant Grove Coach Joe Cattolico says, "Desmond is very bright, athletically talented, and eager to be coached. He is a joy to coach and a big part of our success last year and so far this year."

Lewis was critical in the Eagles going 9-4 last year with a 31-28 loss to Nevada Union in the playoffs. At 6-foot and 165 pounds, this Eagle tries to mimic Baltimore Raven Ed Reed. Lewis says, "Reed is a smart DB that makes many INTs. He makes very few mistakes. Also, he not only locks down in the pass game but also comes up on run support."

Last year, Lewis logged 15 solo tackles, 7 assists, 4 pass deflections, and 1 interception. In the current season, Lewis is the Eagles' fourth leading tackler but the leading tackler in the secondary. In addition, he has a 76 yard kickoff return.

As a sophomore, Lewis started to play wide receiver. However, he was behind Jalen Saunders (now with NCAA Fresno State) on the depth chart and saw limited action. During the current season, he has seen more action. Lewis is a balanced wide receiver who is a deep threat but who can also run the proper routes on third down conversions.

Lewis can run 4.50 seconds in the 40-yard dash, has a shuttle time of 4.30 seconds, can bench press 205 pounds, and has a vertical of 30 inches. He depends on his smarts on the field as he rarely makes mental mistakes.

This Eagle has been playing football nine years and has attended summer camps including Nike Corvallis (Oregon) camp, NUC Ultimate 100, and UCLA. His summer regimen included improving his foot work, lifting weights, and attending plyometric and agility workouts. Lewis hopes that his efforts will allow the Eagles to win section and go to state. Individually, he would like to make the first section team and be one of the team's leading tacklers.

As a junior, he is early in the recruiting process and should get more college interest as long as the Eagles and Lewis continue their gridiron success. He wants to attend a strong football program that is competitive every year. He prefers to be in a warm weather climate but will allow the football program determine his decision. Coach Cattolico says, "Desmond is very mature for his age and an excellent student. I believe Desmond has the combination of athletic ability and grades that will allow him to continue to play football at the NCAA level."

Academically, Lewis has a 3.65 GPA and has not taken the SATs yet. His academic goal is to become a doctor. Aside from football, he also runs track and field. Outside of sports, he loves music and is currently learning to play the piano.

Lewis has the potential and tools to be a solid cover man in the secondary for a college program in two years.
