Article 11: Magleby gunning for SJS title

July 26, 2010

Max Magleby comes across as being organized and knowing what he wants. Going into his senior season, Magleby will be the starting varsity quarterback for Del Oro High in Loomis for the second straight year. As a junior, he passed for over 2100 yards and led his team to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II title game where they lost 21-14 to Rocklin. For his senior season, the signal-caller wants to decide on his college destination by November/December and get another crack at the section title.

At 6-foot-1 and 180 pounds, the right-hander considers himself to be a dual-threat quarterback. He compares his game to former Heisman winner, Tim Tebow, because Magleby has a strong arm and is a high-character leader on and off the field.

This leadership was displayed in the playoffs last year as the Golden Eagles had two come from behind victories that were engineered by Magleby. In a section quarterfinal game against top-seeded St. Mary's of Stockton, Magleby produced a late 4th quarter touchdown to seal the game 30-29. In the following semifinal game against Folsom, Del Oro found itself down 35-7 in the 3rd quarter. Once again, Magleby had to rally his team back for a 43-42 win. In both games, his composure and calmness helped guide his team back for the wins.

Magleby started playing organized football in 4th grade and considers his football strengths to be his scrambling ability and to throw on the run. He bench-presses 235 pounds, squat 415 pounds, and throws a long distance of 64 yards. Magleby also models his game after his older brother, Mason who is a redshirt freshman QB at the University of Nevada-Reno.

During this summer, Magleby has been working on his game with his high school team in seven on seven workouts and attending several summer camps that includes the Elite 11 camp at Cal, Nike camp at Stanford, and the Nevada-Reno camp. Del Oro utilizes the run and gun offense so Magleby has been intensely working on his footwork and reading defenses.

The rising senior has generated a fair amount of interest from Air Force, Army, BYU, Colorado, East Washington, Idaho, Montana, Navy, Nevada-Reno, Northern Arizona, Oregon, San Jose State, Utah, Washington State. He has made an unofficial visit to Nevada-Reno as his older brother is on that team. Magleby has not received any offers but lists Montana, Northern Arizona, and Nevada-Reno as his favorites. He likes Montana and Northern Arizona for their coaching staff, facilities, location, and outdoors geography. And he likes Nevada-Reno for its proximity to home, the trendiness of the town, and his older brother.

Magleby wants to matriculate into a program that has a good team environment where the players bond well and the coaches openly communicate with the players. He would like to continue playing a run and gun offense. Geographically speaking, Magleby does not want to go further east than the Big Ten or Big 12 conference locations. He wants to be relatively close to his home in Loomis.

Magleby has a 3.0 GPA and has not received his SAT scores yet. He would like to major in Criminal Justice or some kind of Engineering in college. Magleby has a different personality on and off the football field as he has an aggressive nature on the field while he is polite, mild-mannered off the field. If all goes accordingly to plan, look for a college decision midway through his senior football season that is culminated by a SJS title game victory.
