Quincy Smith plans to sprint forward with his individual and team goals for the upcoming year. Being able to run 4.5 seconds in the 40-yard dash and dunk in a stationary position, Smith plans to be more of a mentor on and off the court this season. If he succeeds, Salesian could fulfill its goal of winning a second California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) state title in the past three years.
At 6-foot-1 and 175 pounds, Smith is a Point Guard that likes to go to the paint while still being a good distributor to his teammates. Smith compares his game to the 2008 NBA Draft First Pick, Derek Rose, because Smith has similar quickness, agility, and the ability to find the open teammate on the floor. Since playing his first organized game as a five year old, Smith considers his basketball strengths to be his change of pace, pushing the ball up the court, and good court vision.
During this summer, Smith plans to work on his perimeter game as he wants to improve on his junior stats (68% free throw, 30% from the arc, and 54% field goal). He will be doing so by playing for Team Superstars in Fresno in a summer league. His summer coach, LeRohn Dotson, also has a good network of college contacts.
Smith is open to going anywhere for college as he does not have any geographic preferences or any current favorites. He has received inquiries from American, Bucknell, Colgate, Portland, Portland State, UC Davis, and Pacific. He has not received any scholarships offers nor has he taken any official visits.
When Smith decides on which college program to attend, he will want to play for a team that has an up and down the floor pace and that "gets after it." Smith will also take into consideration the returning players, the other players being recruited, and the strength of schedule for this program.
Smith's thoroughness and analytical approach on deciding his college is not surprising as his best subject is Math. In his junior year at Salesian, Smith had a 3.40 GPA and has not yet received his SAT results that he recently took. He would like to major in Computer Engineering in college as he is quite savvy with computers and would possibly work in the high tech industry.
Nicknamed "Q" by his teammates, Smith considers himself funny and outgoing around his circle of friends. He considers himself the best Xbox 360 NBA video game player in the world. If Smith meets both his individual and team goals this upcoming season, he may find himself in a future Xbox 360 NBA release.
