Article 5: Anthony 'mulls' adversity

July 16, 2010

Anthony Mull knows how to overcome adversity on and off the football field. As a sophomore in 2008, he was thrown into the starting quarterback role at Vista Del Lago High in the Sierra Valley Conference (SVC). The Eagles were entering their first varsity football season with no seniors on the roster. Mull's statistics were less than impressive but he did learned toughnessand how to be a leader.

After taking his hits in 2008, Mull passed for 1600 yards and 13 TDs last year in a 5-5 season as a junior. Hoping to build on a solid season, Mull is working to improve his speed, strength, footwork, and arm release this summer. Unexpectedly in late May 2010, Mull's father passed away. Despite this recent adversity in his life, Mull hopes that his efforts will allow Vista Del Lago to win the league title, advance far in the playoffs, and garner him more interest from colleges.

At 6-foot-2 and 180 pounds, Mull considers his football strengths to be his pocket passing, accuracy, and football IQ. Mull can run 4.9 seconds in the 40-yard dash, can squat 450 pounds, and can throw a long distance of 60 yards. When compared to his quarterback peers, he feels that he can break down defenses and game film more effectively. As a result, he considers his game to be a left-handed version of Peyton Manning.

Mull started playing organized football when he was eight years old and has been the Eagles' starting signal-caller since his sophomore year. He describes Vista Del Lago's offense as a general offense that runs and passes 50/50 equally. The passing game will mix short and deep passing routes with the occasional run option. As a result, Mull has to read defenses and blitzes to make the right play call for his team.

During the summer, Mull's high school team attended a football camp at Sacramento State. In addition, Vista del Lago is having regular summer practices. Mull has an overall strong work ethic. When applied to football, he is always the first member to arrive at practice and the last to leave. During his personal free time, he works out to become physically stronger or watches game film to be more football savvy. He has an unquenchable desire to get better in football in all aspects of the game.

Mull is early in his recruiting and has no geographic restrictions. He has not received any calls or offers yet, but lists Cal Poly SLO, Montana, Montana State, and Sacramento State as colleges that interest him. He wants to attend a college program that will help him improve his football knowledge and allow him to compete at a high level.

Mull has a 3.40 GPA and 1550 SAT score, which makes him NCAA academically eligible. He wants to major in Architecture or Math in college as his best subject is Math. Regardless of where his football career ends up, Mull has shown the ability to overcome adversity with his leadership and work ethic.
