Article 4: Skyline Tournament showcases Bay Area talent

The 30th Annual High School Basketball Tournament at Skyline College in San Bruno invites primarily San Francisco Bay Area high school teams. The tournament divides 32 high schools into eight pools that has the top two teams in each pool advancing to a double elimination tournament. The pool play was held on July 10th and 11th while the double elimination is July 17th through July 19th.

The game is played with high school rules and two 20-minute running halves. According to Eddy Harris, Skyline Assistant Coach, the tournament’s purpose is to give back to the community and provide local high school players a chance to compete. Justin Piergrossi, Skyline Head Coach, has been the event organizer since becoming head coach in 2004.

Some notable players who have played in the tournament since 2004 according to Coach Piergrossi:

Rob Jones (Riordan)- San Diego, St. Mary’s
Decensae White (Serra)- Texas Tech
Dan Mavraides (Serra)- Princeton
Mac Peterson (Deer Valley)- San Jose State
Bryan Ngo (Santa Clara)- UH-Hilo
Kyle Wong (Mills)- Cal State Monterey Bay
Mario Flaherty (Mills)- Houston Baptist Univ.
Shawn Echols (Mills)- Houston Baptist Univ.
Matt Fochtman (Mills)- Colorado State, Pueblo

Here is a list of players to watch based on the first weekend:

James Davis, class of 2011, 6-foot-1, 165 pounds, PG/SG, Arroyo - Good outside shot, can pass well, and is quick on defense.

Chris Patterson, class of 2012, 6-foot-4, 186 pounds, PF, Arroyo - Solid rebounder and can hit the mid-range shot.

Khari Owens, class of 2011, 5-foot-11, 160 pounds, SG, Arroyo - Can finish, quick, and can hit the mid-range shot.

Khiari Swift, class of 2011, 6-foot-3, 235 pounds, SF, Arroyo - Plays hard, rebounds, and gets teammates involved during the game.

Josh Amey, class of 2011, 5-foot-11, 140 pounds, PG, Berkeley - Smooth floor general that controls the tempo for his team. Quiet, but effective leader on the team. Comes across as being mature for his age.

Ian Carr, class of 2012, 6-foot-9, 205 pounds, C, Berkeley - Plays to his size in terms of defense and rebounding. Good passer for big man.

Akil Johnson, class of 2011, 6-foot-7, 230 pounds, PF, Berkeley - Good post player and has good outside shot. Has inquiry from Stanford (Mike Schrage).

Theo Hill, class of 2012, 6-foot-3, 175 pounds, SF, Marshall - Has a perimeter game and can take the ball to the basket.

Marquise Tolson, class of 2011, 6-foot-5, 165 pounds, SF, Menlo-Atherton - Has a perimeter game and good control of his body/dribble.

Aaron Anderson, class of 2011, 6-foot-2, 190 pounds, PG/SG, Riordan - Quick feet. Slasher. Can get to basket with ease.

Jeremy Jetton, class of 2011, 6-foot, 156 pounds, PG/SG, Washongton - Plays solid defense and has ball control skills. Will still play in Los Angeles and Las Vegas for his AAU team during this summer.
