Archbishop Mitty of the West Catholic Athletic League has a prolific offense that is highlighted by Cal-bound quarterback Kyle Boehm. As a result, some of the other offensive players may get overlooked. One such player is Rocky Meszaros, running back and cornerback for the Monarchs.
As a junior, he had 88 carries for 686 yards and eight touchdowns that helped the Monarchs to a 9-1-1 season that ended with a first round playoff loss to Valley Christian 22-17. Meszaros has earned the following awards: Freshman Team MVP, Sophomore WCAL player of the year, Honorable mention All-CCS, and Junior WCAL player of the year.
At 5-foot-8 and 185 pounds, Meszaros has been the varsity starting running back since his sophomore year. This Monarch can run 4.48 seconds in the 40-yard dash, has a shuttle time of 4.01 seconds, can bench press 305 pounds, squat 375 pounds, and has a vertical of 32 inches.
Meszaros compares himself to former Villanova star Brian Westbrook because he says, "Westbrook is strong between the tackles, very quick through holes, and can produce big numbers, but can also catch out of the backfield as well. He is an undersized back, but he uses his size to his advantage to a certain extent and so can I. I feel I can do the exact same things at the next level."
Meszaros considers his football strengths to be hitting the holes fast and finding open space to get chunks of yards through his speed. The Monarchs run an option type offense with a spread package heavily induced into the scheme to spread out defenses that takes advantage of Meszaros' speed and open field running ability. A simple screen pass or a short crossing pattern could result in a big gainer if it is in the hands of Meszaros.
During summers, Meszaros is hard at work improving his football skills. He works on pass catching, learning his receiving routes, and improving his running cuts and moves. This Don has been playing organized football for eleven years and has attended several summer camps including Cal Poly, Cal, Stanford Nike Training Camp, SJSU, and Schumans Combine in Fresno (won best running back award). He hopes that his efforts will allow him to have a very productive role in the Monarchs season that will allow them to win a CCS championship title.
Meszaros wants to play running back in college. The colleges that have been in touch with him include Army, Cal Poly (Coach Cook), Fresno State, Montana State, Navy, Portland State (Coach Kaanapu), San Jose State (Coach Malley), San Diego State, UC Davis (Coach Moroski), and San Diego (Coach Staab).
This Monarch wants to attend a school that has a good atmosphere that would help him grow as a person and an athlete. He wants the football and athletic program to be on an upward trend and that can fit him into their system based on his style of play. He wants good coaches that can teach and improve his football skills. Academically, the school must be good because Meszaros is a student-athlete and not just an athlete. He would like to stay close to home but the main factor will be the football opportunity. This Monarch has a 3.00 GPA and 1300 SAT score. He is undecided on his major but his favorite subject is English.
Meszaros is mentally strong as he had a hamstring injury that required him a prolonged time to recover. He had to work day in and day out to heal and do his physical therapy exercises to get back to 100 percent. Aside from football, this Monarch also runs track and field and is on the wrestling team.
Outside of sports, Meszaros is active in community service with about 30 hours per year. He also coaches youth football during their season. Look for a Rock Solid season for the Monarchs.
