Article 46: Rambling Rhett on the loose

September 17, 2010
6-foot-2 and 190 pounds with a tireless motor, Rhett Ramirez of the St. Francis High Lancers of the West Catholic Athletic League (WCAL) will be a nightmare for opposing offenses. Ramirez is a speed based outside linebacker who can take advantage of his speed, length, and aggressiveness. As a senior, he has been a two year varsity starter and runs 4.56 seconds in the 40-yard dash, has a shuttle time of 4.00 seconds, can bench press 250 pounds, and has a vertical of 27.5 inches.

During his junior season, Ramirez tallied 50 tackles with three sacks as the Lancers went 9-4 with a CCS Championship 27-22 loss to Bellarmine. His senior year goal is to be a great teammate and leader for the Lancers. His team goals are to win the WCAL championship, then the CCS Open championship, and the opportunity at a state title.

The Lancers will lean on their defense this year as the offensive unit is younger while the defense has Ramirez along with lineman Chris Chang and defensive back Isaiah Lott. Ramirez has been playing organized football for nine years and considers his best football skills to be his hard hitting and dependable tackling. Since this Lancer is tall and fast, he compares himself to former NY Giant Lawrence Taylor, because he was a huge threat off of the edge and ball carriers rarely got out of his grasp.

During this past summer, Ramirez worked on his pass rushing techniques. However, he had some hamstring issues that was a temporary setback. Now, he makes stretching a fixture in his daily training regimen.

This setback did not scare off the college programs as Cal Poly, North Dakota, and Portland State have contacted him. In addition, UC Davis, UNLV, and Washington State want to view his senior film throughout the season. Ramirez projects himself to be an outside linebacker on the next level. He had unofficial visits and camps at Cal Poly, North Dakota, and UC Davis but had to decline several other invites due to his hamstring issue.

Ramirez had a positive camp experiences at Cal Poly and North Dakota as he was inspired by their enthusiastic coaches and the tradition that they offer. North Dakota has a 3-4 defense, which is what the Lancers have this year and fits Ramirez athletically. He also bonded well with Coach Mannausau and Coach Kotelnicki. Ramirez likes the North Dakota campus and can see himself in their Business major. Sunny and coastal Cal Poly has a tempting location. Plus, Ramirez hit it off with Coaches Brown, Cook, and Lupfer.

This Lancer wants to attend a school that has an enthusiastic coaching staff and tradition. He does not have a strict geographical preference. Academically, Ramirez has a 3.05 GPA with a 1600 SAT score. He would like to major in Business Administration.

On the football field, his teammates call him Rambling Rhett. Off the football field, he is Running Rhett as he is also a star on the track and field team where he runs the 100m, 200m, 4x100 relay, and 4x400 relay. Track helps his conditioning for football, but he only plans on NCAA Football. Watch for Rambling Rhett to be rumbling in the offensive backfield at the NCAA level in 2011.
