Nick Zamora comes across as a pure athlete. The Merced High free safety and wide receiver wants to build on last season by improving his footwork and route running to allow him to get a scholarship offer while he would like to help his team improve on its 4-6 record and make it into the playoffs.
At 6-foot-2 and 175 pounds, Zamora considers his football strength to be his double move on the corner that allows him to create separation. This Bear can run 4.5 seconds in the 40-yard dash, can squat 405 pounds, can bench press 225 pounds, and has a 39 inch vertical. When being covered man to man, he feels that no defensive back can keep up with him. As a result, he compares his separation skills to All-Pro NFL receiver Randy Moss.
Zamora started playing football when he was six years old and has been a varsity starter at Merced since his sophomore year. Rob Scheidt, Merced Head Coach, says, "Nick Zamora is a tremendous athlete. He has great ball skills and an ability to make plays. On the field he is athletic and has a good sense to where the ball is going to be both on offense and defense."
Merced's offense is a spread formation that allows Zamora to take advantage of his athletic abilities in single coverage. The Bears return all their starters on the offensive line, which should give their quarterback sufficient time to find the open wide receivers. In addition, the extra time will give Zamora to work the double move or combination routes. Their cover 2 defense allows Zamora to see the whole to make better decisions that will result in the big hit or interception.
During this summer, Zamora has been working out with his high school team on 7 on 7 scrimmages. In addition, he spends much of his time on his footwork and route running skills. Coach Scheidt says, "Nick is one of the more personable kids in our program. Nick needs to have a great year and stay healthy and the rest will take care of itself."
Zamora's football accomplishments have not gone unnoticed by NCAA schools. Arizona, Boise State, Cal Poly, Michigan, Nevada-Reno, Oregon State, Sacramento State, San Jose State, and Washington have contacted him. The Merced star does not have any geographic preference, as he just wants to be able to play at the next level. Zamora has not received any offers yet and has not made any official visits either. He is most interested in Boise State, Ohio State, and Oregon for their football atmosphere and tradition and believes that Ohio State's offensive schemes would suit his talent the best.
Zamora has a 3.00 GPA and has not received his SAT scores yet. He wants to major in Computer Science in college but his best subject is History. But his biggest attribute may be his maturity for his age.
Zamora attributes his broken childhood as the motivation for him to continue improving his academic and athletic pursuits. He has had to move from household to household many times, which has made him quite spiritual as he is a devout Christian. His maturity and physical athleticism would be an asset to any NCAA football program seeking a solid piece to build a team.
