Article 9: Wolo tests opposing DBs

July 23, 2010

In the upcoming season, opposing defensive backs will need to be weary of wide receiver Gus Wolo. Nicknamed "African Assassin" by his teammates because his parents are from Liberia on the African continent and his uncanny way of "burning" DBs in coverage, Wolo led Sheldon High to the second round playoffs in the Delta River League.

However, he partially tore his ACL in that playoff game. As a result, Wolo has set the bar high for his senior season as he wants to prove that he has overcome his ACL injury and wants to lead Sheldon High deeper into the playoffs.

The ACL injury was his first major injury in his football career that started when he was 10 years old. Wolo has been rehabbing through the summer and feels that he is physically superior now compared to when he had the injury. From an emotional and mental perspective, the injury taught Wolo how to persevere through this difficult time.

At 5-foot-11 and 145 pounds, Wolo considers his best football strengths to be his precise route running and footwork that allow him to be an open target for his QB. Wolo can run 4.6 seconds in the 40-yard dash, has a shuttle time of 4.2 seconds, and has a vertical of 33 inches. He models his game after three NFL WRs: Desean Jackson (route running), Chad Johnson (footwork), and Jerry Rice (accurate hands and Wolo's idol).

Wolo describes Sheldon's offense last year as a 70/30 run/pass ratio, but the offense plans to be more pass oriented this upcoming season. The team will implement a spread offense that will require the WRs to get open quickly for their QB.

During this summer, Wolo's high school team has had practice Mon-Thurs. In addition, Wolo has attended summer camps that include Nike Camp, San Diego State, San Jose State, and the Ultimate 100 Training Camp. In addition to rehabbing his ACL, Wolo has been working on getting off the ball quicker and creating more separation from the secondary. Mentally, he is working on being a team leader and from learning from his past mistakes.

Wolo has no geographic restrictions in his college destination. The programs that have visited his school include Missouri, San Diego State, San Jose St, and Southern Oregon. He has not received any offers yet and has made unofficial visits to Cal and San Jose State.

Wolo wants to attend a college that has a good academic and football program. As a result, he lists his favorite choices as Cal, Cal Poly, Fresno State, Missouri, San Diego State, San Jose State, and UC Santa Barbara. Wolo wants the football program to allow him to learn from the coaching staff and older players during his freshman and sophomore years. As a junior and senior, he would then want to become a mentor to the younger players by showing what he has learned and how he has grown during the first two years.

Wolo has a 3.0 GPA and has not received his SAT scores yet. He wants to major in Architecture or Civil Engineering in college as his best subject is Math. Wolo considers himself to be a people person who gets along well with strangers. In general, this statement is true except on Friday nights when he becomes the "African Assassin" to the opposing defensive secondary.
