The inaugural NCAA-sanctioned NorCal Summer Tipoff was held July 8-9 at City College of San Francisco. The tournament featured 30 high school and club teams that played four games over a two-day period.
Tournament director, Gerry Freitas, said, "The purpose of the event was to give local high school players exposure to Division I coaches." Over 50 coaches attended the event including coaches from San Jose State, Santa Clara, Southern Utah, St. Mary's (head Coach Randy Bennett), UC Davis, UC Riverside (Assistant Coach Vonn Webb), University of Utah, Utah State (Head Coach Stew Morrill), among others.
Gabriel Mello, coach of the East Bay Hoyas, sums the event up best by saying, "Overall, a good event. Nice facility, well organized, decent officiating. Having an NCAA viewing event locally situated is appreciated. One possible drawback is since it was set up in a showcase style with pre-scheduled games rather than a tournament format, there were some match-ups that could not materialize by teams advancing to face each other."
Top Five Players (one player for each position in alphabetic order):
Remi Berry, class of 2010, 6-foot-7, PF, Del Oro, YBA Black: athletic with strong body. High major prospect for sure. One opposing club coach said, "Great length, good ball skills as well as a good passer. Can knock down the 3 and take it to the basket. Easily the best player I saw at the event."
Robert Garrett, class of 2011, 6-foot-11, C, Sacramento HS, Play Hard Play Smart: big man that can rebound and score. Would take ball strong to the basket and was able to hit free throws. One NCAA coach said, "Can't teach athletics and length. Flashes of brilliance. Not heavy footed, light on feet."
Jalen Headspeth, class of 2011, 6-foot-0, PG, Oakland HS, Bay Area Warriors: Savvy PG with good decision making and 3-pt shooting. One opposing AAU coach said about him, "Extremely talented. We could all see how easy the game was to him. He hit 2 3's with someone in his face effortlessly."
Langston Morris-Walker, class of 2012, 6-foot-4, SG, Berkeley HS: explosive player. Good midrange game. Looks for teammates first before his own shot. Several NCAA coaches had him on their to watch list.
Charles Standifer, class of 2011, 6-foot-5, SF, Bridgeton Academy, Play Hard Play Smart: Lefty Wing that can fly and shoot. Great athlete who can finish. NCAA ready body and plays physical with it.
Best of the Rest (in alphabetic order):
Davante Adams, class of 2011, 6-foot-2, G, Palo Alto, Roadrunners: Bouncy, long limbed guard. Explosive on the break, high level athleticism. One NCAA coach was high on Adams as a basketball player, wanted to see his defense skills, and commented that Adams is a two-sport star (also plays football).
JT Adenrele, class of 2011, 6-foot-7, F, Oakmont, E-Time Hoops: Can dominate a game by his size and defense. Can block shots that lead to fast break points for his team.
Maceo Bell, class of 2012, 6-foot-5, F, Trinity-Pawling, Oakland Rebels Black 16: Pure athlete who could get to the basket and rebound. High energy player with potential.
Lydell Cardwell, class of 2011, 6-foot-2, G, Mid-Peninsula, Roadrunners: Smooth with great range and a solid handle. Will be a good defender when he adds strength, has great length for a shooting guard.
James Davis, class of 2011, 6-foot-1, G, Arroyo HS, Lakeshow 17: Good outside shot, can pass well, and is quick on defense.
Ben Freeland, class of 2011, 6-foot-9, C, Montgomery HS, NOR Cal Basketball Academy: High basketball IQ. Has good wingspan that allows him alter/block shots and rebounds. Can run the floor well, but needs upper body strength to compete on the next level.
Nicholas Grieves, class of 2011, 6-foot-3, SF, Aptos HS, Central Coast Cagers &
Colin Gruber, class of 2011, 6-foot-3, SG, Harbor HS, Central Coast Cagers: Gruber and Grieves seem to be interchangeable duplicates. Both had a good outside shot. Had good fundamentals in terms of positioning, rebounding, and finding their shooting spots on the break.
Aaron Hendricks, class of 2011, 6-foot-1, G, Del Oro, YBA Black: athletic, high energy.
Devareaux Manley, class of 2011, 6-foot-3, G, Castlemont High, GP Gloves: good shooter. Quick, combo PG/SG ability.
Rodrigo Puliceno, class of 2012, 6-foot-4, F, Burlingame, KWA Pride: strong in the post, consistently able to get his shot off and finish against bigger opponents. At his best when he bulls his way to the basket. Quick hands on defense and rebounds well in traffic on both ends.
DeVaun Turner, class of 2013, 6-foot-2, G, Newark Memorial, Central Coast Wildcats 15/16U: For someone going into his sophomore year, he is big (225 pounds) and athletic. As a guard, he can rebound and defend post players, but also has footwork to defend smaller guards.
Stewart Wesonga, class of 2011, 6-foot-7, F, San Marin, Richmond Bad Boyz 17: Excellent shot blocker. Can finish with either hand. Athletic and physical. Competes with an aggressive nature.
Justin Woody, class of 2012, 6-foot-1, G, Folsom HS, Nor Cal Pump n Run Grey 16u: Good midrange and 3-pt shot. Deceivingly quick and is a difficult player to guard.
