Raul Lozano has a knack for standing out on the football field. He plays both quarterback and running back on the offense while also playing defensive back and safety on the defense for Yuba City High of the Tri County League. In his junior year, Lozano helped the Honkers to a 6-5 record with a season-ending first round playoff loss to Vanden 48-14. Despite the early exit, this Honker garnered all-league defensive and all-area first team honors.
At 5-foot-10 and 155 pounds, Lozano considers his footwork in the secondary and his ability to read defenses as a quarterback to be his strengths. He can run 4.6 seconds in the 40-yard dash, has a shuttle time of 4.2 seconds, bench presses 220 pounds, squat 365 pounds, and has a vertical of 30 inches.
Yuba City coach John Ithurburn comments on Lozano's strengths. "High FB IQ, very quick, great feet, plays much bigger than his size. Highly competitive, wants the ball, adjusts defensively in a game."
Lozano describes Yuba City's offense as a veer offense that can be compared to the offenses run by the Air Force or Naval Academy. This offense often has a fullback with a two wing set that requires some tricky decision-making by the quarterback. Lozano's football IQ is definitely up to par to run this offense. On the defense, the Honkers run a 4-3 with a cover 3. Because of Lozano's fancy footwork, he is often called upon to take the opposing team's best receiver on an island. If playing on offense and defense is not enough, Lozano is also expected to participate on special teams as the kick returner.
Lozano has been playing football since he was seven years old. When he first moved to Yuba City, the local teams and positions were already filled. Hence, he had to prove himself as a quality athlete through hard work and dedication.
This Honker has been a starter since he was a freshman and joined varsity as a sophomore when he was only fourteen years old. In his junior year, he passed for two touchdowns, rushed for eight touchdowns on 800 yards, and had 69 tackles.
During summers, Lozano works out with his high school team and has attended summer camps at Boise State, National Underclassman (won defensive back award two years in a row), Nike Camp, UC Davis, and San Jose State. His individual goal for his senior season includes improving his speed and strength, working on his breaks to the in or out routes, angles that he takes, becoming a leader, and focusing on team goals. The team goal is to get past the first round of the playoffs.
Lozano has no geographic restrictions in his college destination. And location should not matter as he is getting interest throughout the country. Dickinson (Pennsylvania), Oberlin (Ohio), Sacramento State, South Dakota, and UC Davis have interest in him. He plans to make unofficial visits to Sacramento State, UC Davis, and San Diego and has not received any offers yet.
His preference is to play defensive back in college but Dickinson communicated that he can compete as a quarterback or running back. Coach Ithurburn says about Lozano's college prospects, "His size may hinder him but he is only 16 going into his senior year. He has a ton of potential."
Lozano wants to attend a college that he can play football and get an academic degree. He has a 3.14 GPA and 1190 SAT score. He wants to major in Business Administration in college as his best subject is English. Bubba, what his teammates call him, considers himself to be a funny person who gets along with everyone.
