Article 180:Drew Gooden Spring Extravaganza

April 17, 2011

The Drew Gooden Spring Extravaganza was in full affect on Saturday in Hayward. The host Soldiers' Elite 17 Black team won both of its games with ease. In addition, we saw the much anticipated debut of Tyree and Tyrell Robinson of San Diego.

Mike Pickney 5-foot-4 PG St. Mary's Berkeley (Bay Area Warriors) 2014: At first glance. Pickney looks undersized. But his basketball skill and decision making more than offsets the physical attributes. He has a very Steve Nash approach to playing. Also reminds one of Analy's Max Fujii. Pickney has solid floor vision and can score from inside and outside. In the first game, he almost willed his team to victory with 30 points and 7 assists. He was a late varsity call up for St. Mary's. He believes that he will be in the rotation but does not know how much he will play. If this freshman gets a growth spurt, his recruiting interest should really take off as his basketball skills are beyond the average freshman.

Luke Cochran 6-foot-9 Post Del Oro (Cal Elite) 2011: Cochran is a tall presence who can rebound and block shots. His defense is his strong point. His coaches are pleased with the progress in his offensive aggressiveness.

Jacqui Biggins 6-foot-0 G Serra (Bay Area Warriors) 2013: Very competitive spirit. Has an accurate 3 point shot that creates driving lanes for him. Solid defender.

Michael Bryson 6-foot-4 G Foothill (Spirit Got Game) 2012: Bryson is a big, long guard. For a guard, he rebounds well and can block shots. Has a complete game.

Harold Getz 6-foot-3 SG University (Bay Area Warriors) 2013: For a big guard, he has deceptive agility and versatility. Ability to get to the rim. Needs to expand perimeter game.

Glenn Baral 6-foot-3 G St. Mary's Berkeley (Team 94) 2012: Baral picked up where he left off from the regular season. This guard shoots well and plays with toughness. He also showed an ability to post up against smaller defenders.

Lawrence Otis 6-foot-3 G Mcclymonds (Team 94) 2012: Big guard who has a complete game. Can play both inside and outside. Otis can do a little of everything.

Dulani Robinson
5-foot-8 PG Mcclymonds (Team 94) 2012: Robinson is a tough point guard who also has quickness. He is comfortable with the perimeter shot but can also go to the basket. He also can defend well.

Sherron Bradford 5-foot-7 PG Granite Bay (Spirit Got Game) 2013: Runs the team well. Plays solid defense and will take the big shot.

John Winters 6-foot-0 G Antelope (Cal Elite) 2011: Winters is capable of attacking the basket but has a perimeter game as well. In addition, he plays solid defense.

Joey Frenchwood 6-foot-1 G Newark Memorial (Oakland Rebels 15) 2014: Frenchwood played a good deal for Newark during his freshman year. His ability as a playmaker was evident for his Rebels.

Jalen Mcfadden 5-foot-10 PG Castro Valley (Oakland Rebels 15) 2014: Castro Valley will lose some key seniors, but this freshman can be a quick and explosive point guard.

Matt Ennis 6-foot-3 G Woodside (Roadrunners) 2012: Ennis is a scorer from both the mid-range and the 3 point range. Good catch and shoot threat.

Temidayio Yussuf 6-foot-6 F St. Joseph (Oakland Rebels 15) 2014: Brendan Keane is on his way to college leaving Yussuf behind to be a solid rebounder and post player for the Pilots.

Brian Glodowski 6-foot-0 G Jesuit (E-Time Hoops Elite) 2012: Highly skilled guard. Shows solid leadership. Smaller version of former ETH star, Robert Duncan of Granite Bay.

Mitesh Patel 5-foot-9 PG Christian Brothers (E-Time Hoops Elite) 2012: Smart basketball player who shoots the perimeter well. Very intense and committed player who works out seven days a week with his cardio and strength coach. Solid D2 prospect.

Christopher Smith 6-foot-4 SG Center High (E-Time Hoops Elite) 2012: 3 point specialist who is 40 percent plus. Can get to the basket as well. Brother played at Sacramento State. UCSB has shown some interest.

Khalil James 5-foot9 PG Sacred Heart Cathedral (Roadrunners) 2013: James is a leader and fierce competitor. Solid guard defender.

Solomone Wolfgram 6-foot-4 and 250 pounds F Pinewood (Roadrunners) 2012: Big post presence who can rebound. Has a good mid-range game but can finish in paint as well.

Momir Gataric 6-foot-5 Wing Homestead (Bay Area Ballers) 2011: Gataric is a scorer from perimeter or in the lane. Very intense on the floor.

Steven Grosey 6-foot-6 PG Serra (Bay Area Ballers) 2012: Sees the floor well and is an accurate passer.

Zayn Kirkendall 6-foot-2 SG Valley Christian (Bay Area Ballers) 2011: Another good scorer who can shoot well from the perimeter.

Ryan Edwards 6-foot-6 Post Capitol Christian (PHPS) 2012: Played strong down low. Has raw skills but high ceiling for growth.

Matt Hays 6-foot-1 G Yuba City (PHPS) 2012: Solid shooter. Is team's best scorer. Plays intense.

Blake Williams 6-foot-3 G Kennedy (PHPS) 2012: Solid athlete and strong. Fast and aggressive in the transition game.

2011 Mini recruiting updates

Mike Harris of Monte Vista played for his Lakeshow Senior team. He is in serious contact with Cal Lutheran, Sonoma State, and Whittier.

Lydell Cardwell of Mid Peninsula was assisting his former Roadrunners team. He has an offer from Concordia and plans to visit at the end of the month. UC Riverside is also interested.

Menlo's Marquise Tolson was also assisting his former team. He will attend either Feather River or Pasadena Junior College.

Joshua Amey, Berkeley: Playing for Dream Team Elite. He plans to play at Fresno or Merritt Junior College.

Gary Williams of Castlemont is here with Dream Team Elite. Has offers from Chico State, New Mexico State, and San Francisco but may go the prep route.

Soldiers' roll call

George Johnson 5-foot-7 PG De La Salle (Soldiers 17 Blue) 2013: Heady player who knows how to run the point guard position. Solid perimeter game as well.

Jo Jo Mcglaston 6-foot-4 SG Dublin (Soldiers 17 Blue) 2013: Athletic and can finish well. Above the rim type of player.

Tyrell Robinson and Tyree Robinson 6-foot4 G Lincoln San Diego (Soldiers 17 Black) 2013: The twins are big and quick guards. Seem to thrive in an up and down pace. Next national event will be in Dallas. Against tougher competition, it would be interesting to see how they play in a set offense and defense. Soldiers 17 Black tentatively are scheduled to play in the City Championship event in CCSF before heading out to the Lone Star state. So, another chance to see the twins with some more practice time before the next big national event is possible.

Nathan Thomas, Bellarmine (Soldiers 14) 2014: Younger brother of Zac Thomas. Nathan is of the Kyle Wiltjer mold in that he is a forward who seems comfortable face up or back to the basket. Incidentally, brother Zac is still recovering from knee surgery and hopes to be back for Bellarmine for his senior year.

Elliott Smith, Freedom High (Soldiers 14) 2014: Smith is lanky and long. Moves well without the ball and can play above the rim. High ceiling on this prospect.

Jamaree Strickland, Mcclymonds: The post player is awaiting surgery for his knee in the next few months. He plans to be ready for his senior year. He is still in contact with many colleges but feels that he needs a solid senior year to solidify his recruiting.

Brandon Ashley got kneed in the second game and sat out most of the game we saw. He confirmed that he will be playing on Sunday.

Lawrence Otis of Mcclymonds is with Team 94.

Suiting up for Team Superstars is Vallejo's Tajai Johnson.

Ikenna Iroegbu of
Franklin was reported from another source to be with a Pump team in Southern California.
