Article 181: Uu Fireside Chat

April 18, 2011

Parker Uu is the No. 9 ranked prospect in the NCP 2012 Top 40 as this Jesuit High junior led his Marauders to a 22-10 record. This wing averaged 18 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 block per game while shooting 40 percent from both 3-point range and the field overall. Jesuit advanced to the championship game of the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs.

At 6-foot-5 and 210 pounds, Uu is a national prospect that is being sought after by Cal Poly, California, Columbia, Denver, Hartford, Pennsylvania, Princeton, Saint Mary's, Seattle, Stanford, UC Davis, UC-Santa Barbara, San Francisco, West Virginia, and Yale. Uu shows a good sense of the game as he is quite effective in moving without the ball and can find his spots to line up his perimeter shot. In addition, he often had to play the interior for his undersized Jesuit team and displayed a knack for rebounding and posting up.

Uu reflected on this past basketball season, "My high school team did pretty well this season and made a run for the division I section title as we played very well in playoffs. I think our hard schedule really paid off down the road and it helped my individual skills as well because we got to play some of the best talent in California."

As a nationally recruited prospect, Uu has had some initial thoughts about these schools and their conferences.

Big East (West Virginia): "The Big East is arguably the toughest basketball conference in the nation. The entire conference from top to bottom is stacked with tough, physical teams. Watching West Virginia, I really enjoy the way their fast paced style of basketball. They play tough defense and it is somewhere I can see myself fitting into their system."

Big West (Cal Poly, UC Davis, and UCSB): "The Big West is an up and coming conference that is always tough from top to bottom. All of the teams are in California, which makes it easy for my family and friends to come watch. My brother also plays at Cal Poly, so I was able to watch a few of their games this year. Davis is close to home and has had some really good players in the past. Santa Barbara has made some noise in the conference and made the NCAA tournament the past two years, which is one of my biggest goals. Every team in the conference is competitive, and I can see myself playing at a variety of these schools."

Ivy League (Columbia, Penn, Princeton, and Yale): "The Ivy League is a very underrated basketball conference. The conference consists of some of the top academic universities in the country, and the basketball is just as tough. Princeton did a great job in this year's tournament and was really fun to watch. Their system has proven to be effective against anyone in the nation. I didn't get to watch many other Ivy League games out here, but I know that it is a solid basketball conference."

Pac-12 (Cal and Stanford): "The Pac-12 is a great, competitive conference. I've grown up watching a lot of these teams on TV, and I have always loved watching both Stanford and Cal. These two schools have great academic reputations, which I take very seriously. Based on some letters I have received, both schools have great facilities and campuses. Both are also close to home as well. All Pac-12 schools play a tough national schedule and are always competitive."

WCC (Saint Mary's and USF): "The WCC is another great conference on the west coast. Saint Mary's is a great program that has had some really good players and teams the past couple of years. I like their campus and facilities, and love the way they compete. Their teams are tough, fundamental, and have great shooters, which I really like."

For this upcoming summer, Uu will be playing with Team 94 who is coached by Phil Handy. Uu plans on working on the weak points of his game during the off season that would include increasing his vertical and ultimately becoming more athletic, preparing him for the next level. He also wants to improve his ball handling so that he can play either guard position and become more versatile.

Uu is apt without the ball and can hit the perimeter shot when given space. As a result, his game resembles that of a combination of UCLA Bruin Reggie Miller and Florida Gator Mike Miller.

Uu says about Reggie Miller's game, "Reggie Miller is one of the biggest competitors and best shooters to ever play the game. While I might not be as loud or vocal as Reggie Miller, I am also very competitive and have no problem stepping up to take big shots."

Concerning Mike Miller, "He is still one of the best shooters in the league today," said UU. "If you leave him a little bit of space he will use that to get his shot off which is similar in both our games. He has made a living being able to consistently knock down the deep three, which I think is one of my strong points."

A knock down shooter at any level is always a must for a basketball team. Expect Uu to continue showing up on the radar of many colleges as the summer season continues. And then watch for Uu leading his Marauders in Carmichael.
